How the typing test works
- Open the test and click the text area (or just press any key).
- Type the words shown. Mistakes are highlighted so you can see them as you go.
- When the timer ends you get your speed in WPM, your accuracy and a speed-over-time chart.
- Press Tab for a new test, or repeat the same words to beat your own score.
What is WPM and how is it calculated?
WPM means words per minute. In typing tests one word is counted as five characters, including spaces, so a fast typist is not punished for typing long words.
Gross WPM is the total characters typed divided by five, divided by the minutes. Net WPM subtracts mistakes, which is why accuracy matters as much as raw speed. Many exams only count your net speed.
What is a good typing speed?
| Level | Approx. WPM |
|---|---|
| Beginner | Below 25 |
| Average | 30 to 40 |
| Good | 45 to 60 |
| Fast | 70 and above |
These are rough ranges. Government exam targets are usually in the 30 to 35 WPM range, so most people only need steady practice, not extreme speed.
Tips to improve your typing speed
- Keep your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and use all ten fingers.
- Accuracy first. Speed comes automatically once mistakes stop slowing you down.
- Practise 15 to 20 minutes every day instead of one long weekly session.
- Use the Lessons section for step-by-step finger training before you chase high scores.
- Sit straight, keep your wrists relaxed and look at the screen, not the keys.
More than a typing test
Besides the test you can follow typing lessons, play typing games and see where you stand on the leaderboard. If you are preparing for a job exam, see our SSC typing practice and Hindi typing practice pages.
Practice paragraph
Regular practice is the quickest way to improve. Sit comfortably, keep your hands relaxed, and type each word carefully before you try to go faster. A steady rhythm with few mistakes will always beat a fast start that ends in errors.
